Topic: Ideal Linux distro for a web server.
What linux distribution would you prefer for a web server?
I am planning for a VPS account from linode. Have any of you using VPS hosting?
I would like to know your thoughts on this.

I for one would go with CentOS
A) Its based RHEL and is an enterprise-level Linux distro "mainly" aimed for servers
B) Its Free
CentOS overview from http://www.centos.org/
CentOS is an Enterprise-class Linux Distribution derived from sources freely provided to the public by a prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor. CentOS conforms fully with the upstream vendors redistribution policy and aims to be 100% binary compatible. (CentOS mainly changes packages to remove upstream vendor branding and artwork.) CentOS is free.
CentOS is developed by a small but growing team of core developers. In turn the core developers are supported by an active user community including system administrators, network administrators, enterprise users, managers, core Linux contributors and Linux enthusiasts from around the world.
CentOS has numerous advantages over some of the other clone projects including: an active and growing user community, quickly rebuilt, tested, and QA'ed errata packages, an extensive mirror network, developers who are contactable and responsive, multiple free support avenues including IRC Chat, Mailing Lists, Forums, a dynamic FAQ. Commercial support is offered via a number of vendors.
Sorry, dont have any experience with VPS ........ It ultimately depends on what services you'll be running. Apache + MySql; I guess a virtual server would be a wise & affordable choice.

Any of the major distributions - they have easy package management so you can keep everything up-to-date.

I went with KnownHost, can't remember why. They use CentOS, and I haven't had any serious problems. I've read good things about Linode, but never used it.
If you're planning to manage a web server on the VPS, you're probably limited to whatever distributions they allow.
We use CentOS and we never used to have any issues. Using CentOS over RHEL we have few advantages , we get any updates sooner in CentOS than RHEL.
One small suggestion try using LightHTTPD over Apache.
