Topic: Learning Programing -- Partners needed

Ola guys & girls (if any tongue),

I'm about to start learning some programing languages and I'm starting with Python.

I'm looking for someone who is interested in learning who can join me. We can learn from each other and compete against each other cool

Please post your details or PM me if you are interested.

Salut!
Zak

PS: I'm open to learn ANYTHING else you wanna learn. Just give me a buzz and I'm in smile

Re: Learning Programing -- Partners needed

Sound like fun.  I was getting started with Python about a month ago, but I have another project I want to focus on now and time is very limited.

At the time, I read "Learning Python" from OReilly, cover to cover.  That's an absolute disaster of a programming book, stay away from it.  The free ebook "Dive Into Python" looks _much_ better:
    http://www.diveintopython.org/

I really can't commit to anything right now, but keep me posted on how it goes.  I'll try to send you my email address by "PM" if I can figure that out.

Re: Learning Programing -- Partners needed

O'Reilly's books are about as useful as jumping off a building and expecting to go up instead of down.

Dive Into Python is the best resource to start learning Python with, admitting you have some previous experience with programming.

Let's just pretend I said something amusing here and you consider me awesome for the rest of your life.

Re: Learning Programing -- Partners needed

Thanks guys big_smile

I agree with AdmiralA, the book is for advanced programmers and not beginners.

Any other resources?

I didn't say advanced programmers. I said it's for people with some previous experience with programming. You're expected to know the basic concepts, functions, loops, OOP and all that. Basic, practical concepts that apply to almost all languages. That's why it's 'Dive Into Python,' you get right into it without it holding your hand all the way. If you want that, then you might want to find "Wade Into Python From The Shallow End Of The Pool," though I doubt a book with that title exists, heh.

Re: Learning Programing -- Partners needed

I know you didn't say that. That's what I AM saying ... Check this link:

"Dive Into Python is a Python book for experienced programmers."

I can't find "Wade Into Python", I guess I'm gonna start with this: "Beginning Python - From Novice To Professional"

You know something about it?

I was joking, you can make it out from the bold text:

Re: Learning Programing -- Partners needed

Well, google suggests http://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGu … rogrammers
It has links to a tonne of tutorials for people who are new to programming.

If you're looking for a little motivation, check out pygame.org.  Within a few months of steady learning, you can easily start hacking some basic game examples.

Doesn't make sense to you, probably, but proper books often have the most meaningful of names. I'd like a few examples of these books that have strange names that are published to a physical medium.

How about anything coming from AmiralA needs a dictionary to figure it out? tongue

Well, there are lots of tech books with titles that only an insider can appreciate.  Looking over at the bookshelf:

"The Java Programming Language",
"The C++ Programming Language"
That only makes sense if you know about "The C Programming Language".

"Code Complete"
Refers to a project milestone, for software people.  But that's not really what the book is really about...

So you only "get" the title if you already have a significant background on the subject.  Not all of these are "proper" books, though wink

So I'm articulate and have a great vocabulary. Thanks for the compliment.

You're still able to make out from the title what the book is about. The Java and C++ books make this perfectly clear, and if anything, it's just an inside joke, but it doesn't detract from the meaning of the book's name. The Code Complete book less so, but there's still a general idea.

Not really valid examples.

How about...
"How to Win Friends & Influence People" by Dale Carnegie.

But that's not really a computer related book now, is it?

Yes, you have great vocabulary but you are missing the point which is that we communicate so people can understand us.

What's the use of using jargon, difficult and rare words if the person you are communicating with doesn't understand what you are talking about?

Talk to each person at his level and not your level if your level is higher.

Cheers.

Re: Learning Programing -- Partners needed

Zak, the type of communication I try and have with you is what is normally considered of a standard level. Just because you are unable to maintain that, does not mean you have to see it as a negative factor. See it as a measure of learning and take advantage. Never say no to knowledge.

It's not like I use such far-flung language just to show off. I use it to express myself to the fullest I can, and hackers tend to be very linguistically proficient. They're often required to be to talk about complex things with others.

lol Standard my ass!! lol

It's like you are saying everyone in the group is a loser and you are "Mr. Standard" ... Tough luck for us man wink

And yeah ... It's a great opportunity to keep a dictionary handy!!

I insist that it is of a standard level of communication, you just get confused too easily.

I never at any point implied that everyone else in the group is a loser. See, you're confused again. You misinterpret me when all along in this thread I've been using relatively simple English.

Congratulations, man, you just proved my point.

A rather good interactive tutorial about learning Ruby:
http://tryruby.hobix.com/

The creator of that tutorial has also written a (strange, but useful) book that expands on learning Ruby as well.
