Topic: LUG Meetup Monday 1st June 2009

In this meeting we can have two trainings.

  • Training 1 : For newbies ( 45 minutes session + 10 minutes QA )

  • Training 2 : For intermediate user ( 45 minutes session + 10 minutes QA )

These are some topic suggestions and you can also come up with suggestions

Training 1

  • Installing Ubuntu 9.04

  • Working with KDE

  • Working with Gnome

Training 2

  • Install / compile software

  • Connect / share files on network

  • Making Linux your media center

Imthiaz Rafiq

Re: LUG Meetup Monday 1st June 2009

Hi Imthi,

your suggestion looks good. I would just check, whether 9.04 is suitable for this. I dont know about you guys, but i had major problems with the Intel graphics driver in 9.04, which applies for 50% of laptop users. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/release … cs%20cards

I couldnt use 9.04 properly on my machine and am still on 8.04

What about sharing some live CD's for the people to use it on their own machines first? The live CD thing is for me a major advantage over other OS's.

Re: LUG Meetup Monday 1st June 2009

Hi Matt,

there are couple of threads regarding this issue with Intel on Jaunty. You can either fix [1] the problem or just revert to the older Intel driver.

Re: LUG Meetup Monday 1st June 2009

Hi Alex,

that might be possbible, i just tried the Live CD and 9.04 didnt run properly, so i didnt install it at all. But having to fix this after the install is not really noob-proof...
Its my opinion, but i cant recommend 9.04 to newbies right now, tho it has more eye candy  than 8.04...

Re: LUG Meetup Monday 1st June 2009

Hi Matt,

The real fun starts when something is not working. Now we have big group of people to support the person who gets intro trouble.

May be this will be a good start for people to know others better.

Alex we have to choose only one topic on each training. We cannot cover all of them in singe meetup.

Imthiaz Rafiq

Re: LUG Meetup Monday 1st June 2009

Hey Guys,

I like the idea of sharing some Live CDs. Would love to try different Linix flavours. I am interested in trying Open Suse. Any body have this?

Cheers,
Ambarish

Hi Imthiaz,

I guess the 2nd training will be after the 1st so we can attend both. I hope that's the plan?

Thanks,
Zak

Re: LUG Meetup Monday 1st June 2009

I am reading lot of news that 9.04 is not very stable with lot of hardware. I heard even Dell is not planning to move to 9.04 sad

For training 1 either we can do gnome or KDE session. Can we decide on the topic for training II ?

Re: LUG Meetup Monday 1st June 2009

Hey,
this is what i am sayin...

The gnome - kde session sounds good. We could just do it with a couple of live CD's of 8.04 or 9.04 depending. Before installing, people should see what they like more. If everyone brings his laptop and a 1GB usb pen drive, we can quickly create some bootable usb sticks also...

cheers,
Matt.

Re: LUG Meetup Monday 1st June 2009

Cool sounds like a plan. We can even split into groups and explain each other than a full presentation for which no one has the time to prepare it smile

Hey Guys,
Who will be doing these training sessions today?

Just FYI - Imthi had to leave for India due to a family emergency.

Thanks
Shuja

So sorry to hear that. Please keep us updated on his family situation.

Since today is about OS & software installation, I'm sure many members know this already, hence it won't be a problem.
Plus we have knowledgeable people who can support us (newbies) if we are stuck somewhere.

It's gonna be smooth. Don't worry.

Any volunteers to lead the troop? tongue

Re: LUG Meetup Monday 1st June 2009

I think doing the trainings shouldn't be a problem except:

* Making Linux your media center (Session 2)

I cannot help you guys with this, as I am not doing media stuff smile
