Topic: Topics' Wish List

Hello everyone,

It was nice meeting you all.

As you have noticed, the meet-up today was a bit unorganized, wasting lot of time.

In-order to avoid the same scenario, kindly post the topics/questions you want the experts to cover in the next meet-up.

I'll make sure to compile these after discussing them with the guys who will present them.

Regards,
Zak

PS: Hey Alex, please move this topic to the Meetups forum. I don't have the right to do so.
And if you wanna take over this topic's tasks, please feel free.

----------------------------------------- Update: 2nd June ---------------------------------------------------

This is not a final agenda, please feel free to recommend/request other topics.
Advanced topics can be requested as well and will be added in future agendas.

There are links covering each topic that you have to check before attending next session. This will be easier for all of us and make the meet-up go smooth.

If below can't be covered in one session, please let me know.

Re: Topics' Wish List

Hi guys,

I would like us to discuss about different Linux flavors we use, and share our ideas of advantages/ reasons to choose that particular flavor. I believe that this will be a good topic for discussions, as most of us use different flavors.

Guys, anybody interested in this topic? smile

I personally prefer going technical but I have added your request to the agenda as it's part of the introduction wink

Re: Topics' Wish List

This step-by-step wizard takes a few minutes, asking simple questions to determine what would be the right distribution for you:

Two good sites covering the basics of the shell:
http://www.linuxsurvival.com/ <---Highly recommended, interactive tutorial.
http://www.linuxcommand.org/ <---Goes into more detail.

It seems I won't be able to make the next one or two meetups, as I am flying to Pakistan for two weeks on the 12th, most likely.

Let's just pretend I said something amusing here and you consider me awesome for the rest of your life.
Signature objective: ACCOMPLISHED.

Thanks. I've added the links to the agenda.
Have a nice trip.

Re: Topics' Wish List

Remember that not everyone is keen on running a free, structured training course for newbies.
There were several other viewpoints advanced at last meeting (including my own wink ).

Better leave lots of time for chaos - that's when interesting things happen.

Re: Topics' Wish List

Agreed. Things really start kicking when there's nothing planned and everybody does their own thing, however I think we should stick to this schedule for at least the first few meetings, and once folks are at a good, intermediate level, then I think we can go ahead with Project Chaos, heh.

Re: Topics' Wish List

You will not become good or intermediate just because you attend some meetups. This will take a much longer range, so we should have the "chaos" already planned.
And I think we will go on like this.

I never directly implied that one becomes good or intermediate solely by attending a few meetings. That is not the sole factor.

Planning chaos? Sounds like everything is in order tongue

Re: Topics' Wish List

This is the way we more or less decided to go into the next couple of meetups. And this is done by reason. wink

Re: Topics' Wish List

Have you noticed that the number of people reduced from the 1st meetup? From 22 to 13 (as in meetup.com). Just wondering if it's gonna be the 4 us after couple of months.

I don't mind chaos but there aren't many experts. We did that the 1st meetup and it wasn't benificial in my opinion. 2nd meetup too, I only learned something after talking to the RedHat guy (sorry I don't know your name tongue), Dan & Alex.

And please remember that there are members who never installed a Linux OS ever. What do you guys think?

Hi Alex,
Can you please send a circular to all forum and meetup members with this topic's link so they can tell us what they think/want?

Merci. smile

Re: Topics' Wish List

Just to mention: We were again around 20 people. smile
Not everybody is going to register through meetup.com

Re: Topics' Wish List

Chaos would be more beneficial if I was around, I guess.

On the more serious side, my trip to Pakistan got postponed till August. Chances are I'll be able to make the next meetup smile

Anything you guys want to ask in terms of advanced stuff, feel free to let me know. I'll also be happy to train beginners if that is required.

Re: Topics' Wish List

Now that we have the topics wish-list, we need somebody to volunteer and give these sessions.

Please post a message with the topics you can handle.

Re: Topics' Wish List

I think Alex will be the host.

How is Imthiaz by the way? How's his family?

Re: Topics' Wish List

There's a good chance I'll be able to make it tomorrow, but I can't confirm.

If I am, I'm not sure if I'll be the primary host, but I'll be sure to help with what I can.

@xaitax can you let me know which (or all) topics you would like to handle.

@dan_r how about you?

Lets decide before hand so that there is no confusion later on.

Also, we need to keep the sessions within the timeframe because we need to wrap up by 10pm,.

Imthiaz is fine, hopefully will be with us for the next meetup if all is well.

Re: Topics' Wish List

I have 13 episodes of An open source TV series named 'go-open', details follows

'Go Open' is a South African-created TV series that aired in late 2004, and is
dedicated to open-source software. Created for a mainstream audience, the show
features a hyperkinetic presenter and interviews and showcases from both the
South African and world open-source/free software scene. As the official Go Open
website explains: "The program will showcase success stories, interviews with the
top local and international pioneers, and the latest products and news from the
open source world."

If you interested we can watch one of the first episode(25 min) in the big screen today, and can discuss on it - Video will explain some of the topics in the list above as well.

For interested people I can share the rest of the videos in Thumb drives (Bring your own)

The videos are on 'Creative Commons license: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike'

Are you interested ?

Re: Topics' Wish List

Sounds cool ... I would prefer watching this at home to save time doing other stuff but if there is no one to present the agenda today, that might be a good idea.

What is the size of the whole thing?

Re: Topics' Wish List

I won't be able to attend today's meetup, unfortunately.
